Betty Hutton is pictured with Emerson alum, professor & trustee Kenneth Crannell. In 1985, Betty Hutton received an Award of Achievement from the Musical Theater Society of Emerson College for her contributions to musical theater. Other recipients of this award include: Eve Arden, Gregory Hines and Ben Vereen. Hutton (known for Annie Get Your Gun) taught drama at Salve Regina and comedic acting at Emerson College. In her one-hour-fifteen minute interview for the American Comedy Archives at Emerson College, Bea Arthur talks about her early years as an intern in a hospital, doing minstrel shows and her first break in Broadway. She talks about how grateful she is to do what she enjoys for a living, and speaks about working on "Maude," "Golden Girls," and a number of plays. She also discusses her love for her LGBT fan following, her involvement with PETA and how she strives to use her celebrity for social change. She speaks about the challenges of being a woman in the television and performance industry, and considers the question "Was it worth it?" The Southwick Recital series was an Emerson tradition and one of the oldest oratory recitals in the United States. The series featured distinguished Emerson faculty and alumni/a, along with honored guest artists. The series was founded by Henry Lawrence Southwick in 1900 when he was dean of Emerson College, he later became the third president of Emerson in 1908.

Shanaé Burch is a storyteller at heart and is now using her roots in the theater to revive health and reconcile hearts while pursuing an EdD in Public Health at Columbia University. Her path may seem like a winding one but as she shares her experiences on the stage, in the classroom and as a co-editor of Poetry for the Public’s Health, you’ll find that this Emerson alum is a living embodiment of our motto, Innovation in Communication and the Arts.
